Research Interests

Dr. Angelos Amditis has been very active in various fields of research which include: Sensor systems and Data Fusion, Human Machine Interaction systems, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Active safety and mobility, Environmental friendly transport, multimodality, Virtual Reality and applications, Mobile telematic applications and collaborative environments. Dr. Amditis has also worked as engineer (in the past) on Underwater Acoustics, Digital Signal Processing, Computer Networks, Defense Electronics, Electrical measurements and Data Security.

Especially in the transportation field, he has been very active in many areas. The major topics of research he has been occupied with include: electromobility, electric vehicles, sensor development and use, information fusion, cooperative systems (including V2V and V2I), eCall, Human Machine Interaction, new interfaces and interface elements, human factors and evaluation methodologies on different levels (lab, simulator, field tests), safety applications, tools for traffic management and simulation, study of driving behaviours, driver monitoring, automated driving functions, integration and evaluation of nomadic devices in the driving context, perception and driving environment modelling, digital and dynamic maps, logistics and dangerous goods handling, virtual reality and augmented reality based models and simulation.

Research Activities

Dr. Angelos Amditis has participated in a large number of research projects within the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th Framework and H2020 Programmes of the European Commission but also in other EC supported programmes and in various national projects. He has been the scientific responsible of more than 150 research programmes in the past 20 years, being the main researcher of ICCS / NTUA in all major European initiatives in the area of transport and especially for Intelligent Transportation Systems (but not only) in the area of vehicle surface transport. I-SENSE Research Group 

In February 2002, Dr. Amditis has founded the I-SENSE group, which he is now leading. This group belongs to the Microwaves and Fiber Optics Laboratory (MFOL) which is a common lab of ICCS and NTUA. I-SENSE Group uses the infrastructure of MFOL and is carrying on the experience and its human resources from MFOL’s previous research activities which aim to continue and expand. The I-SENSE group is very active in a number of scientific and research areas with main application areas the Intelligent Transportation Systems, Virtual Environments, Assistive Technologies as well as Smart Integrated Systems & Communication. I-SENSE is involved in a number of EC and National Research Projects and has a significant presence in International Conferences and Scientific Journals. It is also involved in the organization of important events, workshops and conferences.

The I-SENSE Group of ICCS is cooperating with some of the most important Research Organizations and Industries all over Europe. Apart from Dr. Amditis, the I-SENSE group currently employs 80 researchers and additional support personnel (both research and technical). I-SENSE is a worldwide renown group very active in a number of Scientific and Research Areas with main Application Areas the Intelligent Transportation Systems, Virtual Environments, Assistive Technologies, Smart Integrated Systems - Sensors, Communication, Platforms.

Publications 

Dr. Amditis is the co-author of 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and books chapter and more than 240 papers in peer reviewed conferences. At the same time he is the main author of numerous project reports and deliverables within the framework of the research projects he has participated. He has presented transport-related issues in many conferences, in special sessions and in events organised by EC or major research initiatives in Europe, while he has participated in many working groups, special committees and organizations, aiming at addressing specific issues related to ITS and transport (e.g. automation, HMI issues, sensor fusion, nomadic devices, simulation/VR/AR etc.). He has organised a number of such special sessions, events and working groups gathering together the most senior experts in the area of transport research from Europe and all over the world.

Dr. Amditis has been the initiator and a member of the supervising committee of 10 PhD theses and 20 under-graduate theses of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineers of NTUA and 1 PhD of the University of Piraeus. Seven of the PhD theses have already concluded and have provided interesting scientific results and multiple publications. He has also been teaching in various courses (communication and computer networks, communication theory etc.) in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Dep. of NTUA, and the Hellenic Naval Academy for 10 years.

Administrative experience 

Dr. Amditis is a Reaserch Director at the Insitute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) and a member of its Board of Directors, since 2003. He is representing ICCS at ERTICO ITS Europe - The European association focusing on the development and promotion of Smart Mobiity and ITS technologies. On June 2018 he was elected as ERTICO's Chairman for a period of three years. Previously he was a member of its Supervisory Board (since 2012), its Strategy Commitee (since 2010). He is also a member of the ITS Congress European Programme Committee - EPC (since 2015), the Electromobility and Automation Task Force and TM2.0 platform (Steering Body member).

He is one of the founding members, former President (2010-2016) and current Vice-President of the International Association for Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (EuroVR) which currently has more than 50 active members as well as one of the founding members of the ITS Hellas (the Greek organisation for the promotion of the implementation of ITS technologies and applications in Greece), its former President from 2012 to 2016 and the Vice President from 2016 until today. 

On May 2019 he was appointed as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA) and unanimously elected as its Deputy Chairman. In June of the same year he was also appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP S.A.).

On July 2019 he was also elected as an Executive Board member of the ETP-ALICE, the Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ETP LOGISTICS) and he is also Co-chairing the WG3 "ALICE Systems & Technologies for Interconnected Logistics". 

He is the National Representative of Greece at EU on Co-operative Connected and Automated Transport and Mobility (C-ITS and CCAM).

Since May 2019 he is the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Hellenic Port Community System (HPCS) of the Piraeus Container Terminal S.A. (PCT).

He is a Member of the Local Group of Actions (Urbact Local Group - ULG) of the Network Urbact ΙΙΙ “DIGIPLACE”.

He is a Member of the of the Working Group on Smart Transport & Logistics of GSRI's Platform.

Dr. Amditis is supporting, as National Representative, Greece’s positions on Horizon Europe Programme Committee (2021-2027) for Climate, Energy and Mobility.

In addition, he is member of the OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium), the 5G-IA, the PSCE, the ΙLME, the A.SPIRE, the EGVIA, the INATBA (International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications),the MaaS Alliance, the UITP (Union Internationale des Transports Publics), the Digital Transport and Logistics Forum of the European Commission, the eSafety Observers network and of the Nomadic Devices Forum (where he has served also as Secretary), the Trilateral WG on Automation, the euRobotics, SENSORIS, WssTP, and ERTRAC Platforms and the AIOTI Association. He was also a member of the the GEAR2030 (High Level Group on Automotive Industry), the C-ITS Platform - (DG MOOVE, EC) and of the Working Group for the design of the National ITS Architecture of the Hellenic Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport where he also serves as a technical advisor on eCall. 

Other activities  

He acts as a reviewer in several well known journals, like the IEEE Transactions on ITS, IET Intelligent Transport Systems Journal, International Journal of Cognition, Technology & Work, The Visual Computer, Information Fusion, Signal Processing, Sensors. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the IET Intelligent Transport Systems Journal. He has been member of the scientific committee in several conferences like the ITS World and European Congresses, the TRA conference since 2013 , FUSION Conferences since 2013, in conferences organised by Eurographics and Cyberworlds, in the IFAC congress 2005, the International Conference on Control Applications CCA 2006, conferences organized by the Information Fusion Society, in the 7th International Conference on Information Fusion 2004 and in many others. Furthermore he has been member of the Program Committee of the i-CREATe “Travel, Employment, Education, Leisure and Sports” 2010 conference, member of the scientific and organizational committee of the Network Centric Warfare 2005, member (and in some cases chair) of the organizational committee of the annual congress EAM and general chair of the annual INTUITION / EUROVR conferences on virtual reality and augmented reality, organized since 2004.

He is a member of the Working Group on Transport and Supply Chain of GSRT's Platform as well as member of the sub-group on Shipping and Maritime Transport of the GSRT Platform Transport and Supply Chain.

He is the Chair of the CEN-CENELEC Workshop with the title “Interoperability framework for functional components of a modular urban search and rescue robotic platform”. This workshop is part of the standardization activities of the FP7 EU project INACHUS. The aim of this CWA is to provide recommendations to enable interoperability between urban search and rescue (USaR) robotic platforms and the equipment, sensors and tools that are attached to them. This CWA is also intended to provide guidance to the principles for enabling USaR robotic platforms to operate in all ground search environments. In this way a generic platform can be adapted, designed and built for any possible search and rescue (SAR) scenario on the ground. The final objective of this project is to develop a CEN/CENELEC Workshop Agreement (CWA) guide for the technical and operational interoperability of USaR robotic platforms.

He has acted as Panel Member of the scientific assessment of research proposals received under the internal call ‘Junior Principal Investigator Grants’ issued 2017 in the frame of the collaborative plan ‘Programma STAR’ between the University of Naples (UNINA) and CSP and in 2018 he was a reviewer for the University of Naples 2018 Call for research proposals co-funded by the Compagnia di San Paolo (CSP).

He was a Member of the Expert Committee for the Canada Foundation for Innovation (Smart cities), 2020 Innovation Fund competition, Feb-Mar 2020.

He was a Member of the Working Group of the ELEMED EU Project which prepared the ground for the introduction of cold ironing, electric bunkering and hybrid ships across the Eastern Mediterranean Sea corridor.

He was the evaluator of the METRANS 2021-2020-2019 research program of the METRANS Transportation Center.

He was one of the evaluators of the 2017 User Consultation Platform (UCP). The UCP will provide a structured forum for an effective interaction between end users, user associations and representatives of the value chain, and the organizations and institutions dealing,directly and indirectly with Galileo and EGNOS.The first issue of the Galileo User Consultation Platform took place on 28-29 November 2017 in Madrid at INTA Dome.

He has acted as evaluator in numerous calls for proposals by the European Commission in FP7, FP6 and FP5, for example in ICT-Call 7 Objective 5.6, ICT-Call 7 Objective 1.3 and many others, EC reviewer for many projects like DIFAC, 2WIDE_SENSE etc. and evaluator of proposals in the Greek national programme PENED.

Since February 2016, he has the professional recognition of IEEE Senior Member Grade for his significant contribution.
